The Plaque On The Wall

There is a small plaque on the wall of a block of flats built near the site of the Miller Residence in Quay Street, Saltcoats which is dedicated to the memory of Saltcoats’ finest, Captain Betsy Miller.
It is the only visible sign of Betsy’s existence and anyone visiting Saltcoats would be hard pressed to find it. Ed took a photograph of the plaque and when I was enhancing the image for the album, I suddenly realised that the year of her birth differed from the one we had.
We searched the extract of baptism and births and found the record of Betsy’s entry into the world …. Born on 11 th June, 1792.

Time we had a new plaque ...... the details on the old one are wrong!
.
However, we would go further. We would also like to see a permanent memorial to Betsy in a prominent place in the town.
.
A place where visitors would be made aware of the achievements of this great lady of the sea. Surely, Betsy's memory warrants more than a small plaque on a wall.
.
Captain Betsy Miller was an icon in her day, let's not forget that.
