This is a collaboration blending music and poetry to tell the story of Betsy Miller (1792 – 1864), the worlds first female sea captain.

This homespun project is the brainchild of Ed Walker and Linda Harnett, and takes the listener on a musical and poetic journey through the tale of female endeavour and tenacity in an age where women were very much considered second-class citizens.

The music ranges from the catchy ‘Sail on Betsy’, to the plaintiff and folky ‘Captains and Fathers’, with its modal mandolin. Despite the recording’s specialist appeal, the gentle narrative and anecdotal quality of the album are worthy and, I suspect, highly appealing to those that appreciate a story and good tune combined.
