The Betsy Miller Project
The Betsy Miller Project is a collaboration of music written and produced by Ed Walker and poetry written by Linda Harnett.
The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the life and times of Betsy Miller who was the first woman to be registered as a ships Captain. Both Ed and Linda feel strongly that the knowledge of this amazing woman is fading into time.
Captain Betsy Miller is an important part of Scottish heritage yet very few people know of her, or are remotely aware of her outstanding and unparalleled achievements. In her time, Betsy was a famous figure, not only in her native Ayrshire but also in Ireland and indeed reaching across the Atlantic Ocean to the States of America.
Betsy's story is one of grit, determination and valour and also one of love and duty towards her family. It should also be noted that Betsy achieved her unique status at a time when it was unthinkable for women to hold positions of such high esteem.
Betsy Miller deserves to be acknowledged, she deserves recognition and to be remembered. Through the music and poetry we have endevoured to create the spirit of Betsy in an entertaining and enlightening way.
Our mission is to raise awareness, and give Betsy her proper place in the history of Scotland.

Linda Harnett.
